Since I was the first in the English exam in the first term, I think I am eligible to share with my schoolmates on how to learn and master English language.
I have had a strong foundation since I was graduated from St. Joseph Primary School in which the MOI is English. If you would like to improve your language skills, here is my advice.
First, you should read a lot. You can read English novels, so you can learn different vocabulary. Secondly, if you are not interested in reading, you can watch Hollywood movies. I am sure your speaking and listening skills will improve after watching some. Lastly, I may say this is the most effective way, and that’s to communicate with western people, in that case, you can learn grammar and practise your speaking skills. If your English is a bit average, try to learn different accents like British and American accents. Communication is a key to successful interpersonal relationships and communicating with westerners regularly does improve both your communication and English skills. So, try to communicate with people in English more often.
The above is my advice when it comes to learning English. You should try to see if it works or not.

Nowadays, life in Hong Kong is getting more and more hectic. People have to face different problems every day, for example, family problems, inter-personal —relationship and work. As a student, I also need to deal with many problems, including quizzes, projects and homework every day. If you fail in a quiz or exam, you may not want to go home if your mum takes things very seriously. So my main concern is how can I get good results in tests and exams?
First and foremost, learning materials are very important. You need to choose appropriate materials to study. If you find studying in your own room boring and uncomfortable, you can go to the library. Nowadays, everyone spends more time on the Internet than on books or newspapers because you can learn many things on the Net. Furthermore, there are many apps that you can use to read books.
Next, you need to be skillful when you study. For example, I draw up a time table for my daily revision and prioritize my work. It’s very helpful because you clearly know in what order that you need to complete your work. Moreover, note-taking is also crucial as it can help you learn better. You can also categorize your notes you have made to make your revision easier before the exam. When taking notes, some students just write useless things in their notebook. The point is you have to jot the key points of what you learn. You can just remember the key points for your exam.
Last but not least, it is your attitude. You learn nothing while playing games on computers or texting on your phone. Concentration is very important to learning and you need to focus on the things you are doing. Then, you should never give up. You will succeed if you try harder. What’s more, don’t be afraid of making mistakes as we all learn from mistakes. If you can learn from a mistake, you won’t make the same mistake again.
In addition to what I have said about attitude, there are also different learning skills, but rote-learning is not the best. Remember, you need to enjoy learning, then you can learn more things.
In conclusion, studying isn’t for exams. You need to learn how to enjoy the process of learning. Then you will learn without any pressure.

In my class, I’m one of the students who do best in English, and I think it’s actually better to be ‘one of the students’ than to be ‘the only student’.
My classmate Zane who is also good at English is a very close friend to me, and we both enjoy teasing each other - right after I am ‘beaten’ in a test or exam, for instance, I will put myself ‘up in the game’ in every exam, test and dictation, which sometimes pushes my boundaries in order to be the better one. I lost to Zane in the half-yearly exam, I was close enough, 251 to 252.
The main reason why my writings are so good is that I read a lot. I started reading an action series called Alex Rider about two months ago, and I’m already on the ninth book! I’m now only one book away from Anthony Horowitz’s series! I learn lots of vocab and how to describe exciting moments in many different ways.
The reason why I do well in listening and speaking as well is that I have lots of chances to speak in English. I have a helper at home, and she only speaks English, so I always speak English at home. Also, I sometimes chat with Zane in English, so that’s another advantage of having a friend that speaks good English.
In addition, I don’t really study English before exams, I just ‘go with the flow’. I write something that makes sense in writing and say something sensible when sitting the oral exam.
